1949年沖縄県那覇市生まれ。短大時代に日本民藝館を通して沖縄の染織品に親しみ、21歳より柳悦博さんに師事し織物の世界へ。その後沖縄で大城志津子さんに沖縄の伝統的な織物技法を学ばれ、1979年に「まゆ織工房」を設立。極細の糸の織りに取り組まれる中で、ついに蚕が吐き出すそのままの極限の細さである3デニールの絹糸を用いた、ほぼ空気のような薄布の制作に成功。沖縄で蜻蛉の羽を意味する「あけずば織」と名付けられた透明感のある軽やかな織りは、上原美智子さんの代名詞ともなっています。上原さんは「生きることは織ること」だと仰います。「最高の質感は空気である」との思想のもと、蚕の吐き出す一本の命に感謝し全身全霊を捧げる。その創造的なものづくりに世界が注目し、国際的な展覧会でも高い評価を得られています。

Born in Naha, Okinawa in 1949, Uehara Michiko became familiar with Okinawan dyed and woven textiles through the Japan Folk Art Museum when she was in college. Uehara later entered the world of textiles under the tutelage of the renowned Yanagi Etsuhiro at the age of 21. She learned traditional Okinawan weaving techniques from Oshiro Shizuko and established "Mayuori Kobo" in 1979. Using 3-denier silk threads, the finest thread a silk worm can produce, Uehara weaves unbelievably light and airy textiles.
The transparent and light weave, named "Akezuba-ori," which means a dragonfly's wing in Okinawa, has become synonymous with Michiko Uehara. She says, "To live is to weave.” Based on her belief that "the best texture is air," she devotes her whole self to weaving there weightless textiles, and ode to the life of a single silkworm. Her creative craftsmanship has caught the world's attention and has been highly acclaimed at international exhibitions.
