糸と対話し感性を生かしたモダンなデザインで
宮古上布に新しい風を吹き込む。

1959年、沖縄県石垣島生まれ。伝統的な織物である宮古上布に新しい風を吹き込み、感性を生かしたモダンで新鮮なデザインの作品を作られています。1979年より3年間、沖縄本島にある沖縄県伝統工芸指導所で絣や組織織りを学んだ後、1983年にご両親の出身地であり所縁ある宮古島に移住。工房を構えられ、以来35年以上にわたり宮古の地でデザインから染め、織までを一貫して制作されています。宮古上布では「糸の調達」が制作の生命線です。地元で苧麻の糸績みをするおばあたちとのネットワークを築き、届いた糸はどんな糸でも引き受けるという信頼関係のもと、糸と対話しながら、その糸が一番活かされる道具・柄を導き出す、温かな覚悟と愛情にあふれるものづくり。平織りが基本であった宮古上布に花織や綾織などの組織織を採り入れ、糸の自然の色を生かしつつ最近では多色使いにも挑戦し、さらに作品世界を広げられています。

Miyako Jofu

Born in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa in 1959, Nakasone studied Weaving and Kasuri in the Okinawa Traditional Crafts institute on the main island of Okinawa from 1979. Nakasone then moved to Miyako Island, where her parents were originally from and set up an independent work shop where she has been making Miyako Jofu for over 35 years.

One of the difficulties in making Miyako Jofu is procuring the thread, as it is an extremely tedious task. A local network of women was built to facilitate the production of thread, supporting makers like Nakasone to continue weaving.

Miyako Jofu is usually produced using just plain weave, but due to her knowledge in weaving gained while on the main island in Okinawa, Nakasone adopts the twill weave, and the Hana-ori weave into her work. In recent years she had begun introducing more and more colors into her kimono and obi, keeping the freshness and the feeling of modernity in her work.
