京都の鴨川近くに工房を構える、福田喜重氏。平成９年に「刺繍」の分野で初めて人間国宝に認定され、作家活動とともに後継者育成にも力を注いでいます。自然の移りゆく森羅万象を一枚の布に宿すために一切の妥協を許さず、生地の選択から、意匠・染・縫・箔の全行程を一貫して手掛けられています。一針一針で、一瞬一瞬の時を刺し込んでいく刺繍の美。また、福田喜重氏が「水蒸気文化」と呼ぶ、湿気があるからこその霞や靄で朝焼けや夕焼けが楽しめる日本の景色。福田喜重氏独特の「染足の長い暈し」にはその情景と情緒が表現されています。

Embroidery

Each stitch, each moment in time,
Encased forever in the weave of the cloth.

Based along the Kamo River in Kyoto, Fukuda Kiju makes beautiful crafted kimono in his workshop. In 1997 Fukuda became Japans first embroidery Living national treasure. Since then he has devoted himself not only to his craft but also to training successors.

Fukuda handles the entire process in creating his fabrics, from fabric selection to design, dyeing, sewing, and finally embroidery (often with precious metals). He often says the beauty of embroidery is that each pass of the needle punctures the fabric and stitches it with time.
Fukuda also enjoys what he calls, “Steam Culture”. Kyoto is famous for being extremely humid especially in the summer. The haze and mist create stunning vistas which influence his work greatly. The word bokashi is often used when describing his work, the graduation from one color to another, creating romantic and dreamlike views on the cloth.

1976 年　第23 回日本伝統工芸展に「千翔」を出品、初入選
1978 年　第25 回日本伝統工芸展に「雪月花」を出品　奨励賞を受賞
　　　　日本工芸会正会員に認定される
1980 年　第27 回日本伝統工芸展に「生々去来」を出品　奨励賞を受賞
　　　　文化庁に収蔵される
1992 年　京都府指定無形文化財保持者（刺繍）に認定される
