高知県黒潮町出身。自然豊かな海辺の町で幼少期から機音を聞いて育ち、父の勧めで看護学校へ。看護師として働きながら京都の美術専門学校でテキスタイルや染織の基礎を学び、卒業後は紬織の重要無形文化財保持者・志村ふくみ氏に師事し植物染と紬織の技法を習得。1987年には機を持参して渡仏しパリや南仏で個展を開催。帰国後、1991年に日本伝統工芸近畿展で松下幸之助記念賞を受賞。2003年には日本伝統工芸展で文部科学大臣賞を受賞するなど、高い評価を得ています。
作品は平織を基調とした縞や格子の美しい構成が特徴で、糸の太細や精錬の加減による繊細な素材感の変化、藍や茜などの植物染料を用いた深みのある色彩などが魅力です。また、羅/経錦の重要無形文化財保持者・北村武資氏の研修会「うすはたの会」にも参加し、織の表現をさらに追求。精力的に制作を続けられています。

Tsumugi

Sano Miyuki was born in Kuroshio Town, Kochi Prefecture. Raised in a coastal town rich in nature, she grew up hearing the sound of the loom from an early age. Following her father’s advice, she enrolled in nursing school and worked as a nurse while studying the fundamentals of textiles and dyeing at an art school in Kyoto. After graduating, she apprenticed under Living National Treasure Shimura Fukumi, where she learned the techniques of kusakizome (natural dyeing) and tsumugi weaving.
In 1987, she travelled to France with her loom, holding solo exhibitions in Paris and the South of France. Upon returning to Japan, she received the Matsushita Konosuke Memorial Award at the Japan Traditional Kinki Crafts Exhibition in 1991. In 2003, she was awarded the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Prize at the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition, among other accolades.
Her work is characterized by refined compositions of stripes and checks, woven primarily in plain weave. She explores subtle variations in texture through differences in yarn thickness and degumming techniques and achieves depth of color using natural dyes such as indigo and madder. She has also participated in Usuhata no Kai, a study group led by Living National Treasure Kitamura Takeshi, further deepening her exploration of woven expression. She continues to produce work with dedication and precision.
