友禅染めは、江戸時代の貞享から元禄年間に京都の扇面絵師・宮崎友禅斎が古くから伝わる染色技法を集大成したことからこの名がつきました。
東京友禅は、徳川家康が江戸幕府を開設した際、大名のお抱えの染め師や絵師などが京から移り住み、各種技術・技法が伝承され発展したといわれています。
色調を抑えた中にも秘めた美しさと気品が漂う作風が特徴です。

友禅染は、柄の輪郭を「糸目糊」で描くことで染料の滲みやはみ出しを防ぎ、繊細な色彩表現を可能にしています。東京友禅ではその多くが、江戸小袖に用いられていた真糊糸目友禅（本糸目友禅）の製法を守り続け、抑揚のついた味わいのある染上がりにこだわっています。職人達の分業による古典的で伝統的な技法であるこの真糊糸目友禅は、高度な技術と多彩な経験を必要とします。

The technique Yuzen was named after a Kyoto based fan painter, Miyazaki Yuzenzai in the late 1600s. Though he did not invent Yuzen, he is said to have perfected it, compiling many ancient techniques to create a fully-fledged art form. When the Edo shogunate was established, dyers and painters in the service of the feudal lords were moved from the old capital in Kyoto to the new capital in Tokyo. From here it developed and paved the way for it to become what it is today. Tokyo Yuzen is characterized by its beautiful, subdued colors.
