1935年、京都市下京区五条生まれ。お父様を早くに亡くされ遠戚が働く西陣で15歳で織物の見習い工になられます。世襲や弟子入りを経ずに技術を研鑽し、古代に発展し途絶えた織り技法を独学により復元。1995年「羅」の技法において、さらに2000年には「経錦」の技法において重要無形文化財保持者（人間国宝）に認定されました。「羅」という織物との出会いは1972年、「長沙馬王堆漢墓(ちょうさまおうたいかんぼ)写真速報展」でその幻想的な美しさ魅せられ、資料の写真のみから推測して組織を復元。さらに「経錦」という織物は、唐の時代に日本へ伝わり奈良時代以降には織られなくなっていたものを独学で復元されました。とはいえ、北村氏の織物は単なる古代製織技法の復元ではありません。古代のものとは全く異なる現代に生きる織物として、精緻で破綻のない織り組織、洗練された色彩は、常に品格をたたえ、雅な作品として私たちを魅了し続けます。

Mastering the structural beauty of weaving
He is a Living National Treasure in the fields of "Ra" and "Tatenishiki".

Kitamura Takeshi was born in 1935 in Gojo, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto. After the early death of his father, he became an apprentice weaver at the age of 15 in Nishijin, where his distant relatives worked.
He studied weaving techniques without being succeeded or apprenticed to a master, and taught himself to restore weaving techniques that had been developed and discontinued in ancient times, and in 1995 he was certified as the holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) for the "Ra" technique, and in 2000 for the "Tatenishiki" technique. In 1972, he was fascinated by the fantastic beauty of "Ra" fabric at the "Changsha Ma Wangdui Han Tomb Photographic Exhibition" and restored the structure of the fabric based only on photographs. He also restored "sutra brocade," a fabric that was introduced to Japan during the Tang Dynasty but was no longer woven after the Nara Period (710-794), through self-study.
However, Mr. Kitamura's textiles are not simply a restoration of ancient weaving techniques. His exquisite and flawless weave structure and refined colors always fascinate us as elegant and graceful works of art.
